What do Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse all have in common? Besides being great musicians and artists, they all met their fate at the young age of just 27. While Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and Kurt Cobain all had heroin in their systems that caused their deaths, Amy Winehouse suffered alcohol poisoning and Jimi Hendrix took 9 sleeping pills and choked on his own vomit.

Addiction is a very serious issue. Beloved funny man Chris Farley had a serious addiction, and in the end died of a cocaine and heroin overdose at just 33. Also meeting his demise at 33, was “party animal” John Belushi, due to the same cocaine and heroin overdose as Farley.

But, we can’t forget about prescription drugs. An addiction that seems to be sweeping our nation and causing hundreds of thousands of deaths a year. Prescription drug abuse took the lives of actors Brittany Murphy and Heath Ledger. Brittany Murphy who was 32 years old and the Joker actor Heath Ledger was only 28. We can’t forget about youngin River Phoenix, who was only 23 years old when he overdosed on cocaine and morphine on Halloween of 1993.

The use of drugs is constantly on the rise and needs to be taken very seriously. One thing can lead to another, one party to the next- then next thing you know, you’re addicted. Success in recovery is more than getting sober, it is living sober.
