Guidelines for Selecting Blogging Software
There is a wide range of blogging software applications available in the market today, including Movable Type, Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad and WordPress. For most people, making a choice among these options can be very confusing and frustrating process.
The following are some of the things you need to consider before choosing any blogging software.
1. Goals
You need to establish specific goals for your blog. Do you want to grow it into a high-traffic, popular blog? Are you planning on making money from it? Or do you just want to blog for the fun of it? Your goals for your blog will determine the type of blogging software you should select. When considering your goals for your blog, you need to think through these questions:
- Will you want to feature ads in your blog?
- How much space will be required to store the blog’s content?
- Will you want to include additional features in your blog?
2. Budget
Blogging software applications are either free, custom or premium. Free themes are can be used at no cost by any person, anytime and anywhere. Consequently, many people are likely to end up using the same theme. Custom themes are those created specifically for a particular blog. Though they are very costly, such themes are unique to the blog. Premium themes are ready-made themes which can be bought by anyone. Therefore, you need to consider the price you are willing to pay so as to ensure a unique appearance and enhanced functionality for your blog.
3. Additional Customization
Before choosing your blogger software, you need to establish how much customization you would want for your blog. For instance, you might want blogger software which will allow you to modify the layout and appearance of your blog in terms of colors, fonts, logos or designs.
4. Technical Knowledge
How much technical skill does the blogging software program require? This is an important question to ask before making a decision. Some blogging software programs can be understood and navigated by people with very little or no technical knowledge, whereas others have advanced features which require some technical skills.
5. Research
Look at other blogs which are already using the different blogging software programs. Take time to explore the various blogs to find out their level of functionality from a user’s point of view. This will give you an idea of what would work best for your blog. In addition, you need to take time to read what other people are saying. You could simply do a Google search using the blogging software name to read reviews written by other bloggers.
6. Support
This is a very key consideration. What kind of support is offered by the blogging software program? Is it in form of email, live chat or telephone? Is support available at any time of the day and night? How fast is the response time?
